Cherry Blossom Bispebjerg Kirkegård

Anya Jensen5th April 2017
The last few years Bispebjerg Kirkegård (cemetery) has brought the internet down, because of an amazing alley filled with Cherry blossom trees.

I have known about this amazing place for more than 5 years now, and it started when Holly was in kindergarten. I came to pick her up one afternoon and saw a picture of all the kids under a ‘roof’ of stunning Cherry blossom. I simply had to find that place, and off we went. But the Cemetery is vast and we didn’t find it the first time.

But when we did – it was exactly like I envisioned. Absolutely breathtaking. And utterly tranquil. It is not like that anymore, because it has become the most visited spot in Copenhagen in Spring. This year the Borough have put up signs and barriers to keep people away from the chapel, and surrounding areas, because this is a place of grief, and rest and should be treated with respect.

I have compiled a little list of what I’d do if I were to visit for the first time again:

  • Come early – then you might be able to beat the crowds. Or late, when the sun sets – that’s seriously stunning.
  • Lie on the ground, and shoot upwards if you want a shot with no-one else in it.
  • Remember if you shoot against the light, the blossoms can look dark, and not pink like you’d probably want. Look and find the perfect colour, and light for you. I like the low light in the late afternoon/evening, soft and whimsical.
  • Shoot a video of the blossom gently swaying in the wind – so beautiful, and then you’ll always have that to look back on.
  • Show respect – it is a cemetery, people! So do not break the trees, or pick the flowers. Do not litter, make noise or act disrespectfully
  • Make sure you go for a walk in the meadows afterward – Utterslev Mose has always been my place of tranquillity.

All of these images are from the previous years, but have a look at my Instagram and Insta stories for more recent images (lot more crowded I might add) and watch this space as I will soon upload images and video from this year.

The trees are blossoming now, although not all of them, but I imagine people will flock there this weekend. Happy humpday folks – and remember you saw it here first.
