One of the most hyggelige things to do – with your family, or a great friend, is to visit some of the cozy Christmas markets that shoot up everywhere in November and December. I can truly see the point in these, bringing warmth and hygge in the colder months. If you come and visit Copenhagen, you will be spoilt for choice. This year I have rounded up my absolutely favourite markets:
Tivoli Christmas Market 19/11 – 31/12
Tivoli Christmas Market is a true Christmas classic. The theme this year is Alpine wonderland, and more than 20.000 baubles adorn trees and buildings, and more than 50 cozy Christmas stalls, sell everything your heart could desire. To top it all . Tivoli offer the usual rides, many restaurants with menus filled with Danish Christmas classics, and do yourself a favour and try a ‘Flæskestegs sandwich’ – the epitome of Danish Christmas dinner in one compact size. Oh and did I mention – Santa is there too – in his cozy house by the Pantomime Theatre, where he sits ready to take the children’s wishes.
Nyhavn Christmas Market 11/11 – 23/12
Our beloved Old Harbour has one of the most hyggelige Christmas markets around. On the banks of the harbour, the markets has a stunning maritime feel and look to it, with rows of tiny houses, selling eveything from Gløgg & Æbleskiver, to knitwear, leather goods, candly apples and much more. You can even get your Christmas tree there. If you fancy something more substansial to eat, you are spoilt for choice at the many restaurant in the harbour. Or take a canaltour, and see the city from the waterfront – and don’t worry the boats are heated and covered, so you’ll be warm and snug inside.
Carlsberg Christmas Market 2/12 – 4/12
Visit Carlsberg’s Bryggegård welcomes a new Christmas market this year. Come and enjoy delicious mulled wine with beer, eat donuts and try special beer-tastings. You can even go for a horse and carriage ride with family and friends – and remember to get some of the world famour beer to take home with you.
Christiania Christmas Market 9/12 – 20/12
Christiania is the old freetown of copenhagen, they have held their annual Christmas market in the Grey Hall since the 70′. The market is a cozy, but untraditional Christmas market, which lots of different gift ideas, exotic food and drink, are sold in about 100 small Christmas stalls. It gets quite crammed in there, so I usually come early.
Christmas Market at Højbroplads 18/11 – 23/12
On Højbro plads, in the heart of Copenhagen, is the annual Christmas market with thousands twinkling christmas lights, reindeers and Santa. The market has many hyggelige stalls and you can find everything your hearts desires.
