Arty Birthday party at Louisiana art museum

Anya Jensen9th June 2016

My oldest daughter turned 10 a few weeks ago, and in Denmark, you usually celebrate with your family, as well as your classmates. You either pick to host the party for everyone, or all of the girls (or boys) in your class, and that way eliminating anyone being kept out and feeling isolated.

This year to mark the fact that Audrey turned 10 – we had made special plans! We love going to the museum in our family. We love exploring, and we love treating the children to the beauty of art from an early age. They might not know everything there is to know about it, but it broadens their horizon and gives them things to think about. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder as you know, and as far as we are concerned, the more they see, the more they’ll love!

Louisiana is one of the best art museums in Denmark. It is situated on the North coast of Copenhagen, right next to the sea. The museum has a permanent collection and changing exhibitions with different artists.

They also have a fabulous children’s wing, where the kids can come and explore and play with clay, paint and much more. They also offer a ‘Birthday Package’ and this was what we picked. Our choice was Alberto Giacometti sculptures, and I will say that it was one the best parties I have ever hosted, and also attended!

Louisiana_arty_party_ SIMPLYDANISHLIVINGWe had a total of 14 girls – all 9-10 years, and also my youngest who is 7. I recommend that the kids are around this age, because working with the material – you need a bit of skill, and also interpreting the artworks takes time and patience.

The girls were shown around the Giacometti wing by a lovely curator, and they sat down, talked about, and drew their own interpretations of the sculptures. Afterwards, we went downstairs to the workshop, where they were given ‘metal’ skeleton frames that were the base of their sculptures. The girls designed their own; some had their arms in the air, one was sitting down, some were waving, one was swimming etc – very fun to see that each and every child had their own idea. Then they were given black ‘cheese wax’ and had to cover their metal sculptures in that, so they ended up looking like an actual Giacometti. The results were fantastic, and all of the children had a fabulous time and got to bring home their own little Giacometti sculpture.

Afterwards, we had a picnic in a designated picnic area next to Louisiana. My daughter had a marvellous Birthday, and I can only recommend going there if you have a child with a birthday coming up. You can book your own party at Louisiana right here.
